Bronco's Getting a New Engine

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

My dad and I built a new engine for the Bronco. It’s bigger and should be more powerful than what’s in there now. I’m excited.

There was a guy at the hockey rink I played at who had an old Bronco. It was blue with big tires and no top. He’d casually throw his gear in the back of it, hop in, and take off. I thought it was the coolest car and I was completely sold. But I was young with little money so the thought of owning one was simply a day dream. Then one day my old Toyota truck got stolen and the insurance company sent me a check. I suddenly had five thousand dollars to find one, which I quickly did. I bought it while my dad was out of town and I couldn’t wait for him to get back to proudly show it. When he did, he thought it was a pile of crap which I later found out so did my neighbors. To me it was a Bronco with the right color.

We have been working on it since that day. We painted it, changed the top, changed the seats, changed the rims and tires, changed the rims and tires again, changed the engine, and now changing it again, etc. etc. It’s been an endless project in the most positive sense. When I was young, I thought my dad and I could continuously make it better forever. And now I think about how much longer I’ll be able to do this with him or whatever project that happens to consume me at the time. It’s a hard thought, but it has also made me more present during this kind of time spent—To take it all in and enjoy it while it’s here.
